Hair loss cure?

Kimchi: Is it a miracle cure for hair loss?

The Koreans have been eating kimchi since around 300 AD. The fermentation of vegetables was a great way of storing them before modern refrigeration.

Kimchi is widely known for having properties that are beneficial to gut health. Researchers at Dankook University near Seoul carried out a study on 23 patients.

Do kimchi & cheonggukjang combined in a pro-biotic drink demonstrates beneficial effects on serum lipid profiles (which are measured for cardio-vascular risk prediction which nowadays is almost a routine test) indicating improvements in peripheral blood flow. The authors of the study hypothesise that do kimchi & cheonggukjang pro-biotics could benefit patients as a functional food. Improving the outlook for androgenetic alopecia suffers both male and female.

The study observed men with stage II to Stage V patterns of loss using the Hamilton Norwood scale of classification, women with stage I to stage III patterns of hair loss based on the Ludwig classification.

All 23 patients’ measurements were taken at bassline, 1 month, 4 months.

All the patients in the study were administered 80mL of Mogut® (a kimchi & cheonggukjang pro-biotic product) twice a day.

Results 

Baseline = 85.98

1 Month = 90.28 

4 Months = 91.54

The study found that kimchi & cheonggukjang pro-biotic product, could promote hair growth and reverse hair loss without associated adverse effects such as diarrhoea.

Conclusions 

The authors of the study suggested that they observed improvements in hair count and hair shaft diameter. Stating that this has resulted from initiation of the anagen phase as a response to the pro-biotic effect.

My personal thought is that the study is not broad enough and that the results would need to be measured over a full hair growth cycle 5-7 years not just hair returning to anagen and the regrowth that would show. That said I find the results interesting it is also worth pointing out that if gut health is a problem with a client, then this potentially is a treatment option which will give an initial boost to their hair regrowth with additional benefits to the bowel.

Whilst researching this article I came across some copy which stated that junk food is connected to hair loss. Although I do not dispute that a poor diet lacking in quality protein, nutrition and essential vitamins & minerals is a factor in hair loss. I would suggest that a good variety of different foods contained in a balanced diet is the best way to improve your hair,
